After a chance encounter with a travelling musician in 1993, Marama Mullen had no idea her life was about to change forever. Peter Mwai hid the fact he was HIV-positive and had knowingly infected multiple women, including Marama. In the first episode of documentary series I Am, Marama shares a candid and courageous account of living with the diagnosis. She reflects on the stigma, fear, and isolation she endured when HIV was widely seen as a death sentence, and how she transformed her experience into a sense of purpose — becoming a powerful advocate for Indigenous women living with the disease.
